HSWU is a Trade Union Organization within the Health Sector in Ghana. It is registered by Law and holds a collective Bargaining Certificate (CBC) that empowers it to do negotiations and collective bargaining on behalf of its over 40,000 membership. It has also been registered with the Registrar General's Department and holds a Certificate to Commence Business and a Certificate of Incorporation (can sue and be sued). Its Headquarters is at Hall of Trade Unions, Accra. The Union is affiliated to TUC (Ghana) and some Global Unions.
The Health Services Workers’ Union (HSWU) of Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) came into existence in September 1966, through the merger of the then three independent trade unions. These were Gold Coast Hospital Employees Union (GCHEU), Medical Field Unit Employees Union (MFUEU) and Environmental Health Employees Union (EHEU). The three independent unions which operated from 1944 to 1955 had merged into one trade union known as the Health and General Hospital Workers Union (HGHWU) in 1955. HGHWU became affiliated with the Ghana TUC in 1957. HGHWU operated as an autonomous union from 1955 to 1965 following an emergency National Delegates Conference in Kumasi in 1966. The name HGHWU was changed to HSWU.
We envision HSWU, able to organize and recruit all paramedics and other health workers into a formidable organization with members getting job satisfaction to deepen industrial harmony for a better health care delivery.
To organize, protect, defend and educate all members to secure better conditions of service and job security through negotiations, collective bargaining and social dialogue to enhance productivity.
Members of HSWU are guided by values such as Professionalism, Teamwork, Discipline, Quality Health Service, Integrity, Excellence and Innovativeness.
